A Mental Health Movement changing how society understands and responds to
Mental Health and Suicide.
OUR MISSION
We’re here to change how society understands and responds to mental health and suicide — equipping people with the tools, language, and confidence to show up with presence, understanding, and care when it matters most.
Awareness isn’t enough. Response is everything.
OUR VISION
A world where mental health and suicide are no longer met with silence or stigma.
Where people feel confident to have real conversations — and respond with understanding, compassion, and care in the moments that matter most.
OUR DIFFERENCE
Lived experience is our difference.
We truly understand Mental Health struggles and suicidal crises because we’ve lived them ourselves. That gives our work a depth of compassion, insight, and human understanding that can only come from being there, allowing us to connect with people on a deeper, more personal level.
STARTING CONVERSATIONS, CREATING CHANGE
Through speaking, education and community initiatives, LUMAURA® helps people understand Mental Health more deeply and respond with greater confidence, compassion and care.
-
Powerful lived-experience talks that challenge how we understand mental health and suicide.
In these talks, Lauren McDonough, Founder of LUMAURA®, shares her story with honesty and courage — helping audiences move beyond awareness and toward deeper compassion, understanding, and more confident responses when someone is struggling.
Because sometimes the most important thing we can learn is how to truly show up for another human being.
-
Some of the most important conversations happen when people finally feel safe enough to speak.
Through panel discussions, community forums and collaborative events, LUMAURA® creates spaces where mental health and suicide can be explored openly, honestly and without judgment.
When people feel safe talking about what they are truly carrying, understanding grows, and communities become stronger.
-
A genuine understanding of mental health extends beyond mere awareness.
Through lived experience and practical insights, supported by trauma-informed care, LUMAURA® helps people cultivate a deeper, more human understanding of mental health and suicide.
By bringing greater clarity, empathy, and perspective to these conversations, we assist individuals, workplaces, schools, and communities to engage with mental health in a more informed and meaningful way.
WHY THIS WORK MATTERS
Mental health struggles are more common than many people realise. 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental health condition each year, and more than 3,200 lives are lost to suicide in Australia annually.
9 lives are tragically lost to suicide daily.
Behind every number is a person — a life, a family, and a story that matters. Often, somewhere along the way, there was a moment where that person reached out and said they weren’t okay. Yet many people are unprepared when someone opens up about their pain, unsure of what to say or how to respond.
LUMAURA® exists to help change that. Because when someone says “I’m not okay,” the response they receive in that moment can shape what happens next — and sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer another human being is simply the presence of light in their darkest moment.
BE PART OF THE CHANGE
When someone says ‘ I’m not okay’, the response they receive can change everything. Join us in helping more people feel prepared to show up, respond and respond with care.
Together, we can create a world where fewer people struggle in silence.
FOUNDER/CEO
LAUREN MCDONOUGH
At 19, during one of the darkest moments of her life, Lauren attempted to take her own life.
A train hit her.
She survived — but lost both of her legs.
Lauren spent a week on life support and underwent more than 30 surgeries. Doctors told her she would never walk again.
They were wrong.
After years of rehabilitation, learning to walk again became part of a much bigger journey — rebuilding a life that once felt impossible to imagine.
Today, Lauren is the founder of LUMAURA® — a Mental Health Movement working to change how society understands and responds to Mental Health and Suicide.
Because through her own experiences, Lauren came to understand something deeply important:
When someone is struggling, the response they receive from others can matter more than we realise.
Sometimes, the most powerful thing one person can offer another is simply being the light in their darkest moment.
And sometimes, that light saves lives.
